LGBTQ PUBLIC POLICY BRIEFING FOR FAITH LEADERS: February 27, 2019

Father Thomas Hopko of blessed memory produced arguably the Orthodox Church’s worst and most harmful body of writings on same-sex love. Yet even he recognized the difference between theology and civil rights, and expressed his support for legal protections for LGBTQ individuals, couples, and families. It is in this spirit that Orthodoxy in Dialogue shares the following announcement. We know for a fact that many Orthodox priests in the US and Canada quietly support these kinds of initiatives.
Note that there is a way to participate in this meeting online.

LGBTQ Public Policy Briefing for Faith Leaders

A Deep Dive of the Equality Act & State Legislative Work

February 27, 2019 | 11:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. ET

As we begin to experience the results of our victories last November we are gearing up to protect our past triumphs and advance our push for full equality.

With that in mind, the Human Rights Campaign invites you to attend a policy briefing on the 2019 Policy Priorities for the LGBTQ community, including HRC’s upcoming efforts to pass the Equality Act and advance and protect equality in the states. The briefing will be held at the Human Rights Campaign Headquarters, for those able to attend in person and via Zoom, an online video conference tool for those unable to attend in person.

Legal and policy experts will discuss how the recent debates over religious liberty and other LGBTQ issues affect people of faith and faith-based institutions, and on the importance of civic engagement and the role of faith in shaping public policy. Together, we can protect our rights and ensure that equality prevails.

Agenda and list of speakers to come. Please feel free to share with your networks of faith leaders interested in supporting federal and state public policy efforts. If you have questions, please direct question to religion@hrc.org.
